About Religious Freedom Day

International Religious Freedom Day recognizes the passing of the Religious Freedom Act of 1998. The act aimed to protect religious freedom on an international level by establishing an International Religious Freedom office in the U.S. Department of State. It also established the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom as an independent and bipartisan body. The office and commission monitor international religious freedom and make policy recommendations to the President, the Secretary of State, and the Congress.

Religion in Tennessee

The Pew Research Center’s Religious Landscape Study estimates that Tennessee is about:

  • 81% Christian
  • 14% Unaffiliated (“Nones”, Atheist, Agnostic)
  • 3% non-Christian (Jewish, Muslim, Other)
  • 2% undetermined

The Tennessee Constitution grants Tennesseans the right to worship according to their conscience and specifies:

…that no human authority can, in any case whatever, control or interfere with the rights of conscience; and that no preference shall ever be given, by law, to any religious establishment or mode of worship.

The Question(s)

Join us to explore questions such as these about yourself and those who share your belief system:

  • Does your community enjoy the same rights and freedoms as others?
  • Does it experience equal treatment by government officials?
  • Is it properly and fairly represented by Tennessee media?
  • Do members of your community feel comfortable making a public expression of their beliefs?
  • Has your community experienced discrimination?
  • Has it been the target of hate crimes?
  • Have members of your community had their personal beliefs challenged by government officials?

Please make your voice heard. Comments from attendees will help determine the theme of the 2018 State of Religious Freedom Report for Tennessee.

A light breakfast will be provided; we ask that you please RSVP so we have an accurate count.
