Tennessee Youth for Human Rights is raising awareness this summer about equality through the arts. We want kids to understand what it means to treat one another with respect and dignity, and what better way to learn this than through their own artistic creations! Help us spread the word in your community to any kids interested in submitting artwork.
Who can enter?
Any school-age children in Tennessee may enter the contest. This includes public, private and homeschooled children from Kindergarten through High School.
What kind of art?
Poems, short stories, visual art, songs, dance, video productions, and spoken word that promote the message “fair treatment for all people.” Performance art should be submitted as a YouTube video link to the email address below. Visual art, short stories and poems may be mailed or emailed. Visual art that is very large should be photographed and attached to an email.
How to submit?
Submit online or by postal mail to Tennessee Youth for Human Rights, PO Box 40072, Nashville, TN 37204. Include the following information with your art submission: 1) artist’s first and last name, 2) age, 3) grade, 4) school name, 5) a short description of your art project, 6) why the message “fair treatment for all people” is important to you, and 7) contact information.
What is the deadline?
Art must be received by July 17, 2019 at 6:00 pm. Winners and prizes will be given out at the Nashville Celebration of Mandela Day on Friday, July 19, 2019 at 4:00 pm.
Winners
1st , 2nd and 3rd place entries will be showcased at Mandela Day, where they will receive prizes, then will be shared online at TNUHR.org.

Tennessee Youth for Human Rights is dedicated to implementing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at local and regional levels. Its membership is comprised of individuals, educators and groups who are actively forwarding the knowledge and protection of human rights by and for all Mankind. Its purpose is to provide human rights educational resources and activities that inform, assist and unite individuals, educators, organizations and governmental bodies in the dissemination and adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at every level of society. Surveys have found that most people have only a limited understanding of human rights. The Declaration contains the thirty rights that together form the basis of a civilization wherein all people can enjoy the freedoms to which they are entitled, and nations can coexist in peace.
